Ozzie Care Services Inc worker becomes
Paterson Citizen of the Year

Local Man who turned to God Ten years ago after his life had reached rock bottom has taken out the Paterson Citizen of the year award. Peter West a selfless and tireless worker for Ozzie Care Services was presented his award by Paterson’s MP Bob Baldwin at the ceremony in Forster.
“Peter had a vision to give out food parcels; he wanted to help build peoples self esteem, Mr Baldwin said”. Mr West has in fact put aside his hardships, I wasted forty years of my life before getting a calling from God and a vision to help street kids, the former transport worker said I was born into a Christian family but I could never figure out my calling until my revelation.
My conversion was over a ten day period and God delivered my tools in the form of a BBQ trailer. With the help of family and friends, two trailers fitted to health standards BBQ and food storage compartments were built. We began Friday night’s reaching kids on street with the support of the local police and the council.
We then moved to assisting the local schools with the breakfast feeding program and food parcels for the needy.
My contracts in the transport industry assisted and we were able accumulate food packs. While some food was donated the remainder was funded from profits from the trailers at events with the council, community events such as Tocal field day.
Eventually the trailers were called upon for use by PCYC, the Police to setup at locations around the area to deal with youth and other needs.
With the Ozzie Care Services running at full compactly the June floods hit and have taken us to a new level of care to the community. We had around 24 volunteers working around the clock feeding SES and other emergency workers and later working with the department of housing and Centrelink to supply vital food parcels to flood victims, we estimate we handed out around 50 pallets of food products that stretched us to our capacity.
The food was distributed across all flood affected areas of the Hunter region.
During the floods that devastated Newcastle and the Hunter Region in June 2007, Ozzie Care Services was established from a number of small groups to meet the needs of the area, by supplying much needed support to the SES and those in the community in need. Even to this present day we are supporting families who have not been able to return to their homes.
